Mojitos are another drink difficult to order out if you are trying to avoid sugar. Almost all are made with added sugar or other sweeteners that add to the sweetness and high-sugar content. Once you’ve cut most sugar out of your diet like I have, anything too sweet is less enjoyable and can even make you feel sick. For those that like mojitos and want to make them at home using no added sugar (besides the lime), below is my recipe for a simple and delicious low sugar vodka mojito!
Earlier this year I posted my low sugar margarita recipe if you are looking to serve an option of drinks with low sugar content.
The shopping list below is to make one mojito, so assuming you aren’t drinking alone you’ll need to plan your shopping list accordingly. A traditional mojito is made with rum so you can also substitute the alcohol to your preference. Our go-to vodkas, depending on how much we want to spend, are (1) Deep Eddy Vodka, (2) Ketel One, or (3) Costco’s Kirkland’s Vodka. If you’re lucky to live near a state that allows Costco to sell liquor, their Kirkland brand vodka has been compared to the quality of Grey Goose at a fraction of the price!
If you are looking for a snack to serve with your mojitos, try making my homemade guacamole or fresh tomato & cilantro salsa.
Shopping List
- 1-2 shots (1 1/2 – 3 ounces) of vodka (or rum if you prefer)
- Juice and pulp from one large lime
- Handful of mint leaves
- Anywhere from a splash to topping-off-the-glass with club soda
Instructions
- Combine the lime juice and mint leaves in a glass.
- Using a muddler, muddle (aka stir while adding pressure) the lime juice and mint together.
- Add the vodka, and top with club soda.
- Enjoy (responsibly)!
